Written and recorded over the summer of 2015, the duo self-produced the album, recording their obsessively crafted sounds to tape in search of the sonic world they wanted the songs to inhabit.
In early 2015, two months after the release of ‘Until The Water Runs Clean’, Pete and Jack began talking about making a new album to be written and performed as an electric duo. With a basic blueprint of the album’s sound in their heads, they set about customizing their instruments and equipment to be able to achieve it. Over the next few months, in between promoting ‘Until The Water Runs Clean’, they began exploring their new set-up and its dynamic possibilities. With a few songs written, they began the album in June, continuing to write during the recording process.
“Listening to and playing the music, we could picture the place where the songs were happening – out in the hinterland, on the perimeter - and we came up with the album/band name BLACK SEVERN, which to us was some way of describing both the sound of the music and the place where the songs were happening. That in turn made the lyrics fall into place, and helped us make quick decisions about which musical ideas did & didn’t fit with the story we wanted to tell, so the whole thing came together quite quickly in the studio. Four of the songs on the album got written in one-day bursts and were recorded immediately while the ideas were still fresh, so the writing and recording processes went hand-in-hand. We knew this music would sound best recorded to tape and we made a decision to leave the original sounds raw, which meant the emphasis was on capturing the right sounds and performances from the beginning, and that gave us the atmosphere we were after. It all feels well planned now but it was actually a very organic thing – we were just trusting our instincts. It was only afterwards, standing back from it, that we realized how well it all fitted together.”
"..DARK AND DENSE. VERY UNIQUE."

" RATING 8.0. PSYCHEDELIC, ACOUSTIC AND OMINOUS. BLACK SEVERN'S MUSIC IS NOT EASILY CATEGORISED BUT ISN'T THAT EXACTLY THEIR CHARM?"

"THERE IS A RAWNESS THAT REMINDS OF BLOODIED BARE-KNUCKLE BOXERS EMBRACING AT CLOSE OF FIGHT. LIKE TRAWLING THROUGH A DITCH, BLACK SEVERN DELIVER MUSIC THAT IS COVERED IN SLUDGE AND BEST TAKEN BEHIND A BLACK-OUT CURTAIN AS THEY CONTEMPLATE A WORLD TURNED TOPSY-TURVY WITH THE MANY, SLAVES TO THE FEW."
